Belgian club Boccaccio’s trailblazing ’80s and ’90s programming highlighted on new compilation
The 38-track Boccaccio Life – 1987-1993 features Kevin Saunderson, Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard and more.
A new compilation album is celebrating the prime of pioneering Belgian club Boccaccio, which hosted a slew of key dance music innovators in the late ’80s and early ’90s.
Due out April 25th on Music Man Records, Boccaccio Life – 1987-1993 compiles 38 tracks played at the Destelbergen club during the titular period. The compilation will be available in three formats: as a 10×12″ vinyl boxset, a four-CD collection, and a digital album.
Curated by former Boccaccio resident Olivier Pieters and club regular Stefaan Vandenberghe, the compilation features the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard (as Mr. Fingers), A Guy Called Gerald, The Orb, Blake Baxter, LFO and Kevin Saunderson (under his recently-revived e-Dancer alias).
Although Boccaccio is closely tied to the New Beat movement, the venue—which closed in 1993—regularly platformed house, techno and acid trailblazers through its Sunday programming. In addition to bigger hits, the new compilation includes key tracks from the venue’s history, including Roger Sanchez‘s releases under his Egotrip moniker and “Circus Bells” by basement house luminary and Dance Mania affiliate Robert Armani.
